An emotional journey that reaches your intellect without being academic, the music of Andre Woodvine has one foot firmly planted in the colorful rhythmic beauty of the Caribbean and the other in an ever-expanding world of jazz.
Andre's early experience with improvisation began in a junior high school band; "We would try to vary the melody without our teacher noticing." Andre's interest in jazz blossomed when he attended Berklee College Of Music, and in 1986, he graduated with a Performance Degree (Honors) majoring in the alto saxophone. His interest in saxophones extended to the tenor and soprano saxes, the flute and the Yamaha WX7 Midi Wind Controller.
In 1988, Andre joined the West Indies Jazz Band, and was featured on theirt C.D. 'New World Music'. He has appeared at numerous jazz festivals throughout France and the Caribbean, sharing the stage with such jazz greats as Donald Byrd, Bobby Watson, Gonzalo Rubelcaba, and Roy Haynes.
Andre enjoys composing in a variety of idioms and in 1992 won the Heineken Caribbean Song Competition with his piece "Hold You In A Song"'. He has produced two CDs of original Caribbean Jazz, Voyager in 1995 and Citronella in 1998. Andre's original compositions have been featured on The BET Cable Jazz channel, including a special one-hour showcase entitled "Jazz in the sun".
In 1997 the Barbados Telephone Company featured Andre on a series of telephone credit cards recognizing jazz musicians who have made a significant contribution to the countries' jazz scene.
In 1998 he assisted in the formation of the first associate degree of music program at the Barbados Community College, where he now teaches part-time.
Andre's recent activities include tours to Martinique, and Toronto, Canada where he performed on the popular Canadian televisions Mike Bullard show.
André, his wife and two sons reside on the island of Barbados.
